EBook Description

All of Izzie Publicover's plans seem to be going awry. The Christmas that Almost Wasn't (Our Canadian Girl: Izzie, #1) PDF EBook The 11- PDFyear-old was really looking forward to a trip to Halifax with her fisherman dad, but the port city was so crowded with soldiers that they couldn't get tickets to a movie or even enjoy a milkshake at the Green Lantern restaurant. Now it looks like Izzie's relatives won't be coming for Christmas because of a fierce winter storm over the south shore of Nova Scotia.

Budge Wilson sets her contribution to the Our Canadian Girl series of historical fiction in the tiny Maritime fishing village of Granite Cove, circa 1941. While Izzie: The Christmas That Almost Wasn't deals with Canada during the war years, world events play only a small role in this chapter book, making Izzie a less exciting reading experience than Sharon McKay's Penelope: Terror in the Harbour or Lynne Kositsky's Rachel: A Mighty Big Imagining. What Wilson does offer is a richly textured picture of what it would be like to be a child in a remote fishing community in the 1940s. Izzie's parents have entrusted her and her brother Joey with most of the preparations for Christmas. Their attempts at chopping down a tree, stringing popcorn, and dyeing tablecloths red form the core of this lighthearted domestic novella. And when the world outside intrudes at last in the form of three castaways from the war, her Granite Cove values of self-reliance and hospitality lead Izzie to make her most inspired plan of all. (Ages 8 to 12) —Lisa Alward
